Where the budget goes first

    Scrubbing, caching and previews are all storage work, felt continuously.

    Does real work in effects, transcoding and 3D — less so in photography alone.

Plan storage as a workflow, not a number

The arrangement that works is tiered: fast storage for the project in front of you, larger and cheaper capacity for everything finished. Deciding that split before the build settles how many drives, how many bays and which board.

Retrofitting a sensible storage layout into a machine chosen without one is the common regret in creative builds.

  • A fast working drive sized to hold current projects comfortably
  • Bulk capacity for the archive, on cheaper storage
  • A backup that is not inside the same machine

Memory decides how large a project can get

Timelines, cached previews, effect stacks and every clip you have scrubbed through all occupy memory simultaneously. Cross the ceiling and the application starts paging to disk, which is why an edit session degrades over its second hour rather than being slow from the outset.

Resolution and timeline length both push that ceiling upward, so the number to specify against is the most ambitious project on your horizon, not the one currently open.

Colour, if the output depends on it

If the output is graded, the display stops being peripheral and becomes part of the machine: rendering accurate colour into a panel that cannot show it means grading by faith.

Plenty of creative work does not need that, and paying for it instead of paying for drives and memory is a common way to end up with a beautiful screen attached to a frustrating computer. We will tell you which camp your work falls into.

What matters most for video editing?

Drives and memory, because those govern scrubbing, caching and how large a project can get before things turn intermittent. Processor and graphics show up at export and in effects. Invert that order and you get a machine with an impressive specification that irritates you all day.

Do I need a graphics card for photo editing?

For photography alone, often not — memory and storage matter more. For video, motion work and 3D it does meaningful work. Tell us which applications you use and we will be specific rather than general.
