Where the budget goes first

  1. Balance

    Mixed work punishes a system with one strong component and one weak one.

  2. Memory capacity

    The component most likely to be the binding constraint across varied work.

  3. Cooling headroom

    A machine asked to do several demanding things needs to sustain all of them.

  4. Expansion room

    Mixed requirements change; the machine should be able to follow.

When no category fits

Plenty of people do several demanding things on one machine: some 3D, some video, a virtual machine or two, and games in the evening. Specifying that as though it were any one of those produces a system that is excellent at one job and awkward at the rest.

The useful approach is to identify the constraint each activity actually hits, then specify so that none of them is starved.

Headroom is the point

Machines for mixed work benefit disproportionately from margin — a power supply with room, a case with airflow, free memory slots and drive bays. The requirement is the thing most likely to change.

  • Free memory slots rather than a full board
  • A power supply sized for the card you might fit later
  • Drive bays available for the storage the work will need

Questions

Is one machine for everything a mistake?

Not usually, provided it is specified for the mix rather than for one activity. It becomes a mistake when the requirements genuinely conflict — a silent machine and a sustained heavy workload, for instance. We will tell you when that is the case.
