What each part actually governs, and what changing it does to everything around it.

A system, not a list

Components are usually described one at a time, which hides the thing that matters most: they constrain each other. A faster graphics card raises the demand on the power supply and the case airflow. More memory does nothing if storage is the bottleneck. A larger cooler needs a case that will take it.

Specifying well means understanding those relationships, which is most of what a build conversation is really about.

What each part governs

Processor: how quickly individual operations complete, and how many can run at once. Graphics card: everything drawn, and much 3D and video work. Memory: how much can be open at once before the system spills to storage. Storage: how fast anything is read or written, felt constantly. Power supply: whether the rest can draw what they need. Cooling: whether any of them can sustain their speed. Case and board: what will physically fit, and what can be added later.

  • Processor — operation speed and parallelism
  • Graphics card — rendering, 3D, video acceleration
  • Memory — how much is open before spilling to storage
  • Storage — the responsiveness you feel all day
  • Power supply — the ceiling on everything else
  • Cooling — whether speed is sustained or merely peak
  • Case and board — what fits now and what can be added

Balance beats any single number

A machine with one outstanding component and one weak one performs like the weak one. This is why comparing systems on a single specification is misleading, and why a well-balanced modest build routinely outperforms an unbalanced expensive one at the tasks its owner actually does.

Which component should I upgrade first?

Whichever is currently the constraint, which the symptom usually identifies. Upgrading anything else produces a faster component waiting on the same bottleneck.
