Performance upgrades

Every machine has exactly one thing holding it back at any moment. Upgrading anything else changes nothing you can feel.

Where the budget goes first

  1. Identify the constraint

    Upgrading the wrong part is the most common and most expensive mistake.

  2. Check what the machine will accept

    Slots, clearance, power and board limits decide what is even possible.

  3. Change one thing

    Two at once makes it impossible to know which one worked.

The symptom names the part

Each bottleneck has a signature. Long waits at boot and when launching anything point at the drive. A machine that is fine until the fifth window and then labours points at memory. Trouble confined to games and 3D, with everything else normal, points at the card. Brisk for twenty minutes and steadily duller thereafter points at heat.

These signatures hold often enough that describing the behaviour usually identifies the part — and when the behaviour does not match any of them, that mismatch is itself worth chasing rather than ignoring.

A faster component does not fix a different bottleneck

A faster processor in a machine short of memory is a faster processor waiting on storage. This is why upgrades disappoint: not because the part was poor, but because it was not the part in the way.

It is also why the diagnosis matters more than the catalogue. A modest upgrade aimed at the right part beats a lavish one aimed at the wrong part, every time.

  • Change one component, then reassess

Questions

How do I find the bottleneck myself?

Watch what the machine is doing when it frustrates you. If it is slow from a cold start, suspect storage. If it degrades as you open more, suspect memory. If it starts fast and fades under sustained load, suspect cooling. If none of those fit, it is worth a proper diagnosis.

Is it worth upgrading an older machine at all?

Frequently yes, and sometimes clearly not. A single upgrade to an otherwise sound machine is usually far cheaper than replacement. A machine needing several parts at once rarely is, and we will say so.
