Storage upgrades

Moving from a mechanical drive to a solid-state one changes how a computer feels more than any other single change available.

Where the budget goes first

  1. Drive type

    Mechanical to solid-state is the transformative step. Everything after it is refinement.

  2. Capacity

    A drive running near full is both slow and awkward to update.

  3. Interface

    NVMe or SATA, decided by what the machine physically supports.

Why it is felt everywhere

Starting up, opening programs, switching between them and searching are all storage work. A mechanical drive makes each of those a short wait, and those waits are most of what people mean when they say a computer feels old.

Replacing it removes them all at once, which is why a machine that felt finished routinely feels new afterwards.

NVMe and SATA, honestly compared

NVMe drives are faster than SATA ones on paper and in sustained transfers. For everyday use the difference between the two is far smaller than the difference between either and a mechanical drive.

If the machine takes NVMe, use it. If it does not, a SATA solid-state drive still delivers most of the benefit — this is not a reason to postpone the upgrade.

  • Size it so it does not approach full
  • Plan how the existing data moves across

The old drive is not wasted

A working mechanical drive still has a job as bulk storage for things that do not need speed — archives, finished projects, backups. In a desktop it can usually stay in the machine alongside the new drive.

Questions

Will my files and programs move across?

Normally yes. The existing installation can usually be transferred so the machine starts up as it did before, with everything in place. Where a clean installation is the better option we will say so and explain why.

How large should the new drive be?

Large enough that it never approaches full — a drive at ninety per cent capacity is slower and awkward to update. Look at what you use now and allow substantial room, particularly for photos and video.
