Memory upgrades

Memory is the working surface. When there is not enough of it, everything slows at once — and adding some is often the least expensive fix available.

Where the budget goes first

  1. Capacity

    Almost always what matters. Enough is transformative; more than enough does nothing.

  2. Compatibility

    Type, speed and board limits decide what will actually work.

  3. Configuration

    How modules are arranged affects bandwidth on most systems.

The symptom is distinctive

Being short of memory does not feel like general slowness. It feels like a machine that is fine, then becomes unresponsive as you open more, then recovers when you close things. Disk activity rises while you wait, because the system is using storage as overflow.

That pattern is specific enough to act on. A machine that is uniformly slow from the moment it starts is describing a storage problem instead.

Check what the machine will take

Three things decide whether an upgrade is possible: how many slots are free, what maximum the board supports, and whether the memory is soldered. On many laptops it is soldered, which makes the amount fitted final.

Worth establishing before buying anything, and a couple of minutes to check.

  • Free slots, and whether existing modules must be replaced rather than joined
  • The board's supported maximum and type
  • Whether the machine solders its memory

Capacity over speed

For most work, having enough memory matters enormously and having marginally faster memory matters very little. Where a budget forces the choice, capacity is nearly always the right side of it.

How much memory do I actually need?

Enough to hold everything you keep open with room to spare. Rather than a general figure, look at what your machine reports while you are working normally with your usual applications open — that number is about you rather than about a category.

Can I mix my existing memory with new modules?

Sometimes, if type and speed are compatible, though mixed configurations can run at the slower module's speed and are occasionally unstable. Matched modules are the reliable route; we will tell you which applies to your machine.
